About Us
Who is Inland Action?
Inland Action, Incorporated was chartered on September 17,
1962 with 15 members. The genesis of the organization stemmed
from the realization that Norton AFB was in very real danger
of being closed. The Air Force Logistics Command was phasing
out the San Bernardino Air Material Area and there was no
further use for the base.
The founders of Inland Action realized the tremendous economic
and social impact that Norton AFB had on the surrounding area.
The Publisher of The Sun at that time, Mr. James A.
Guthrie, sent his son and his editor on a six-month tour of
Air Force Bases, at his own expense, to examine base/community
relations and to determine if and how a community could influence
Air Force thinking on plans to keep a base open. This organization
was founded from their report. Initially, some members wanted
to be known as "the Friends of Norton" or something
similar to identify their close ties to the base. At least
one in the group, however, believed the group should be much
more than just a supporter of Norton. He envisioned the group
promoting economic development on a broad scale throughout
the surrounding area, hence the name Inland Action. Over the
years, this group has continued to be a very strong supporter
of the military in the area while addressing the broader economic
issues of the Inland Empire.
Objectives:
To assist and encourage the economic well-being and betterment
of the Inland Empire of California.
Role:
To pursue its objectives in the capacity of a catalyst, rather
than an operational organization. Upon the identification
of a need, Inland Action shall encourage, with the resources
at its disposal, an operative organization, be it political,
regulatory, quasi public or private, to assume the responsibility
for action. If such an organization does not exist, or if
it is inappropriate that an existing organization assume the
responsibility, Inland Action will encourage the formation
of the proper entity to accept the responsibility. Individual
Director members are encouraged to seek the support of Inland
Action on those economic concerns affecting the member's industry.
Inland Action's involvement and support is subject to the
Directors' approval.
